WEEKLY PICTURE PROJECT - self portrait

for the weekly picture project we were asked to create a self portrait.

i decided that i didnt want to show my full face and the reason behind this was that sometimes when you think you know someone you only really know a little bit about them and sometimes what they want to show you.

ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY - Group task

as a group myself, helen, russ and nikola where asked to create an environmental portrait. our group decided on location photography using the studio lights.
we went into the university library and asked a member of staff if we could photograph them once this had been arranged we then looked for a suitable place, set up the lighting equipment and did some trial shots with one of the members of our group.

below are a series of trial shots and final images taken.

trial shots

final images

i think out of all the image we took the last one worked best as the colours were slightly more vibrant and the composition is better to. the other images haven't been edited but the last one has with adjustments being made in photoshop.

MY CANDID PHOTOGRAPHY

for candid photography i didn't really want to do street photography, so whilst at events including birthdays, weddings and christenings i captured images of candid/reportage nature. although the human condition was something which i tried to en capture within my images its not always very apparent.
below are some of the images which i found best showed what i wanted to portray, which included:
  • belief/faith
  • fun
  • love
  • friendship
  • happiness
  • pride

ANTONIA'S CHRISTENING

JILL & MATTS WEDDING

LUKE'S CHRISTENING

MICHELLLE & GRAHAM'S WEDDING

EMMA'S 30TH BIRTHDAY

UCBC GRADUATION '09

MY CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY (1st attempt)

for my corporate photography, my friend who is a nurse and also a member of the Territorial Army agreed to have some pictures taken in a corporate style. the images where taken in the studio and for most of them i only used a single light but for a few of the head shots i did you two studio lights . all editing took place in lightroom and text was added in photoshop.

fig.1 and fig.2 - with these i wanted to try and create a poster style image. figure 1 was the initial image which was turned to black and white in lightroom i then imported to to photoshop cropped it slightly and added text.

fig.1

fig.2
fig.3,4,5 & 6- the idea behind these images was to not really have a face in the picture or to have the face clearly in focus. this was so that on seeing the images you didn't automatically associated it with anyone in particular. i believe that a portrait doesn't always have to be of the persons face and company/person can be portrayed in other ways to.

fig.4

fig.5
fig.6
fig. 7,8 and 9 - these images are just straight forward portraits fig.7 was created using two studio lights the front one at 45/45 and one at the back which lit the back and side of the face although i think the light is probably a little stronger than needed it does create more depth that just the one light the effects of this can be seen in image 8.
i also included image 9 as i like the expression on the models face and think this would of worked quite well had the flash gone of during the photoshoot.

fig.10

for this image 11 i wanted to try and create a cross over between the models occupations and show both sides of what she does i did a few other images similar to this but felt it didn't really work as well as i had hoped.
fig.11

as previously mentioned my model is also a nurse full time and these last two images are corporate style portraits. wanted the pictures to look quite light and bright and her to appear warm and friendly.

MY 'FINE ART' PHOTOGRAPHY (1st attempt)

For my fine art my initial idea was to portray the bond between mother and child, we also had to keep in mind the 'human condition'.
With my idea it was my intention to portray the unconditional love and unbreakable bond between mother and child. I tried to achieve this by making both subjects to appear naked portraying the skin to skin contact which is how the bond is initially created between mother and child.
Below are some of the images i produced.

fig.1

fig.2

fig.3

fig.4

All of the above images where produced in the studio using daylight only. camera settings were 1/30 sec, f5.6. editing took place in lightroom with some minor adjustments being made using photoshop.

After taking these i decided that they didn't really respond as well as i had hoped to the assignment title 'the human condition' and where not as fine art as maybe as they could of been. i think the most successfull image from the photoshoot was fig.4
For the reasons above i decided to change my concept and come up with a new idea for this part of the assignment.

LIGHTING TECHNIQUES

lighting workshop

during the workshop four lights were set up and in a X gradually a light was turned of and the effects can then be seen in the images

all four lights on

all four lights but a fifth light was add in front and above the model

here is the above lighting set, as you can see there are four lights corner to corner and the fifth light on the boom above the model

the two back lights switched off with the both front ones one. white balance has also been changed.

as above but with the above light also on

only the above light on

as above but light balance changed, and model looking towards the light

this is the lighting set up which was used on the images below
